+28% Organic MRR Growth in 2024 and Bootstrapped to Profitability

In a sector where headlines are dominated by multi-million dollar funding rounds, this result is proof that sustainable, profitable growth is possible and can create a strong foundation for long-term success and customer trust.  

In this conversation with Brian Østberg, CEO of .legal A/S, we take a look at the company’s financial results, what they mean for customers, and how it will help shape .legal A/S’s path forward. 

A Look at the Numbers 

While we achieved a modest profit (EBT) of DKK 69.000 this fiscal year, this achievement marks a significant milestone for us as a company. In the SaaS industry, upfront costs to develop services are high, making early profitability rare, which is why many startups secure capital from outside investors. 

Here’s a summary of our financial performance: 

The total revenue for the fiscal year is DKK 10,77 million, however we have reduced our overall revenue from the previous year by approximately DKK ½ million. This decline in total revenue reflects our decision to phase out consulting and implementation projects, focusing instead on recurring licensing revenue, which is more sustainable and scalable. We believe that making this strategic adjustment builds a healthier financial foundation and a strong position to grow from. 

Despite lower revenue we managed to break-even with a tireless focus on cutting costs in 2024, which we managed to cut by DKK 2 million.  

All of this happened while maintaining positive equity and very little debt. Our books are solid with sound financial numbers, and this allows for more control over our financial direction.

Bootstrapped to Profitability 

Getting to profitability required deliberate and sometimes tough decisions. Key measures included downsizing office space, streamlining operations through cutting, standardising and automating tasks, and meticulously reviewing every line item in our budget.  

These steps reduced costs but also increased efficiency, so it fed back into the business and has influenced our mindset and culture.

By avoiding the need to seek outside investors, we have avoided the stress and limitations often tied to external investors. This gives us long-term stability and the freedom to prioritise customer needs over short-term growth. 

Product-First Mentality 

We believe the best thing we can do for our customers is putting the product first, which sometimes requires making tough decisions to ensure we maintain efficiency.  

We have learned to turn down customers proactively when their needs fall outside the scope of our offering. This approach allows us to prioritise those who align with our product offering and trajectory, which has the added benefit of creating a leaner and more focused organisation, which actually strengthens our product for existing customers and reinforces our position as a trustworthy partner.

Projections for the Future 

75% of the cost base is now covered by recurring revenue, which positions .legal A/S in a strong position to scale sustainably. The 28% MRR growth in 2024 was achieved with minimal marketing and sales efforts, and supported by the strength of the product and minimal churn. 

In 2025, we plan to expand by improving our product and strengthening partnerships to serve customers even more. We will keep refining our offering and collaborate with our partners to scale efficiently while staying financially sustainable and customer-focused. 

Our financial stability also enables us to give back. In 2025, we will offer our product to non-profit organisations for 1 euro/year, providing them access to compliance technology for “free”.
